Titans Battle Toledo To Scoreless Tie

DETROIT (9/18/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team had a few scoring chances, but so did Toledo, and at the end of the day, defense and goalkeeping stole the show in a 0-0 contest to start the 2017 campaign.
Titan junior goalie Marina Manzo tallied three saves and the defense also came up with a huge stop in the second half to keep the Rockets scoreless.
The Titans had seven shots and Toledo 10 in the game.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 20, when the red, white and blue visit Fort Wayne in a 1 p.m. start.
First Half
- Both teams attempted one shot in the first half as neither team could get a real rhythm going on offense.
- The Titans had the best chance in the half as freshman Rima Youssef had a look at the goal, but Toledo came up with a save just 14 minutes into the contest.
Second Half
- Things opened up in the second half as Toledo took five shots compared to Detroit Mercy's two.
- Manzo came up with two saves in the period, and senior Rachel DeLuca was able to deflect a potential goal shot from the Rockets with just two minutes to go.
- Freshman Rachel Russo had the lone shot on goal in the second half for the Titans that was saved at the 84:10 mark.
Overtime
- The Titans came out firing with four shots in the first overtime.
- First junior Suzie Redick was denied a little more than two minutes into play. Senior Phylisha Drayton had a shot saved at 97:22, while Russo's header was saved with just under 20 seconds left in the period.
- Toledo hit a shot over the net in the first extra session, and then Manzo came up with a save in the opening minute of the second overtime.
Key Notes
- The Detroit Mercy-Toledo series is now 6-6-1.
- Detroit Mercy is now 7-17-1 all-time in season openers and 13-8-4 all-time in home openers.
- This was the first time in 25 years that the Titans started the season with a scoreless tie.
- Toledo had seven corner kicks in the game compared to none for the Titans.
- Detroit Mercy had four freshmen starters and played eight freshmen in the game.
- Manzo now has 182 career saves, just one away from moving into sixth place in school history.
- It was also her 13th career shutout as she now has sole possession of fourth in school history in that statistic.
