Titans Capture 6-0 Victory Over Madonna
BOX SCORE
DETROIT -- For the second straight year, the Detroit Titans (5-2-1) welcomed the Madonna Crusaders (1-3-0) to Titan Field and once again, Detroit won the match 6-0. Five different Titans scored and the Crusaders were outshot 18-1 overall.
Senior Alexandra Suschak (Broadview Heights, OH/Brecksville Broadview Heights) started the Titan scoring with her first of the year at 13:43. Her hard shot from just inside the 18-yard box, received from sophomore Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, ON/St. Ignatius) and senior Alyssa Korson (Suttons Bay, MI/Lake Leelanau St. Mary's), went high and past the goalkeeper making it 1-0 Detroit.
Freshman Alyssa Riley (Whitby, ON/Father Leo J. Austin) continued to play well against NAIA schools recording the next two goals for Detroit after scoring three times and adding an assist at Marygrove last Wednesday. Her first came off a shot from the left side of the box that bounced past the goalkeeper and her second tally came off a nice setup from a pair of teammates. Sophomore Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) played a quick ball to Quarrell who crossed the ball to Riley who headed the ball into the net. Riley now has a team-high five goals and 11 total points good for second on the team.
The Titans were up 3-0 at that point and received a penalty kick. Junior Rebekah Dornbos (Midland, MI/Midland) stepped up making the shot which was her second successful penalty kick in 2011 and the third of her career.
McCollum added two more points to her team-leading total of 14 scoring at 64:05. She made a quick move around a pair of defenders and her low hard shot on the left side from just inside the 18 gave Detroit a 5-0 lead. The goal was McCollum's third of the year and with the earlier assist, now has three goals and eight assists.
The final Detroit goal came from freshman Sam Pierce (Casco, MI/Cardinal Mooney) who scored her third of the season firing a shot into the lower right part of the net. After a pair of goals against Marygrove, Pierce has now taken three shots scoring three goals in three games. Her goal total places her in a tie for second-best on the team with four other players.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) made one save, on a free kick from 20 yards out on the only Madonna shot of the game, en route to her second shutout of the year and ninth of her career.
The next action for the Titans will be this weekend as the team will travel to Richmond, KY to face the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. Game time will be Sunday at 1:00 p.m. EST.
