The No. 5 Tyler Junior College men’s soccer team overcame an early deficit to beat San Jacinto, 3-1, Friday night at Pat Hartley Field.
Freshman forward Casey Osborne lofted a shot into the net to put the Apaches on the board with six minutes left in the first half.
Samuel Hosseini scored on a direct free kick early in the second half to put TJC up 2-1, and Sammy Dieng right-footed a shot from 25 yards to make it 3-1 with 15 minutes remaining.
“It was hard fought and a good game. These games always are — closer than the score says,” said TJC coach Steve Clements, whose team improved to 5-1-1 overall and 3-0 in conference. “I know we’ll be in a battle down there.”
Both teams took six shots on goal. TJC had three corner kicks to San Jacinto’s two and Apaches goalkeeper Chris McGaughey had five saves.
San Jacinto (2-3-1) was playing its first match since the death of player Jose Perez, who was killed in an auto accident involving three other teammates and a second vehicle on Sept. 13. The other three teammates survived the accident.
The Apaches entertain Coastal Bend today at 1 p.m. in another conference match.
