Tornado drop conference game to Mount Olive
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The King University women's soccer team never appeared to be in control of the game against the University of Mount Olive. Two goals pushed the Trojans past the Tornado deliver King its second conference loss.
Due to weather in the area, the opening whistle was pushed back a bit. In the early minutes, Mount Olive looked to be pressuring. Damillia Brooks hit a shot for the Trojans in the sixth minute that was blocked. King would not tally their first shot till the 23rd minute when Catherine Walsh sent a shot at net that was saved by Stephanie McCoy, the Mount Olive keeper.
In the 25th minute, Olivia Drake made a big save to keep the Trojans scoreless. Both teams continued to shoot at the net and in the 30th minute, Mount Olive found the back. Jess Hickey delivered a shot at net and Drake made the save but on the deflection, Ellie Barnes sent it past Drake and into the net making the score Mount Olive 1, King 0.
Shots would continue to come from both teams but nothing would find the netting. Going into the half, Mount Olive led King 1-0.
The Tornado opened the second half when Kendyl Baird delivered two shots at net, one saved by the keeper. In the 53rd minute, Nichole Poppe found the goal for the Trojans. Off a 40 yard free kick, Poppe sent a shot into the top shelf over Drake's head.
King would continue to take shots at net but it was one of those days and nothing would go in. In the 61st minute, Baird delivered another shot that was saved by McCoy. Walsh followed two minutes later with another shot that had the same result. In the 80th minute, the Tornado saw themselves with an opportunity after a foul in the box. Walsh stepped up to take the penalty kick, but McCoy came up big again with the save. In the same minute, she made another save on a shot from Hulda Sigurdardottir.
The final whistle blew and King was defeated 2-0 by Mount Olive. King outshot Mount Olive 17-15 and had three corner kicks to their five. Olivia Drake tallied seven saves for the Tornado.
Up next, King will travel to Gaffney, S.C. to take on Limestone College on October 15 at 5:00 p.m.
