Tornado fall to Bobcats 2-0
BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's soccer continued their Conference Carolinas schedule when they hosted rival Lees-McRae College. The Bobcats scored a pair of second half goals to take the contest 2-0.
Lees-McRae (6-4-1, 4-1 CC) pressured the Tornado early an often, taking eight shots in the first half. Jacob Copeland had the Bobcats' first shot on target in the fourth minute, but Kari Sveinsson turned it away.
King (1-8-1, 1-4 CC) had their best scoring opportunity of the first frame in the 33rd minute asLuis Alonso took a header from the middle of the box that was saved by the Bobcat keeper. However, the Bobcats turned the field and Andrew Shoemaker ripped a shot in the 35th minute that was stopped by Sveinsson.
Sveinsson kept it a scoreless tie at halftime as he turned away another shot in the 42nd minute. Lees-McRae outshot the Tornado 8-2 in the first half and had more corner kicks, 3-2.
The pressure paid off for Lees-McRae in the 49th minute as Scott Alford placed a ball on Jordan Wright's head. Wright then flicked the ball from the middle of the box into the lower left corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
Sveinsson then came up with three more saves before Wright struck again. Wright got past the defense and had his first shot go off the post, but it came right back to him as he finished it into the open net.
Sveinsson tallied his seventh save of the game in the 89th minute as the Tornado fell 2-0. Lees-McRae registered 17 shots to King's four while corner kicks were pretty even at 5-4 in favor of the Bobcats.
King will be in action again on Monday when they travel to the University of North Georgia. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
