Tornado push win streak to 3
BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's soccer team did nothing short of impress against Conference Carolinas opponent North Greenville University. Two first half and two second half goals helped the Tornado defeat the Crusaders with ease.
King started the game moving fast and looking for an early goal tallying three shots in the first 11 minutes. Nothing would come out of them but in the 20th minute, Chris Hicks posted his seventh goal of the season. Hicks found himself with the ball in the middle of the field, beat a defender and sent a shot past the North Greenville keeper making the score King 1, North Greenville 0.
The scoring did not stop there for King (5-4, 3-0 CC). After a North Greenville foul in the box, Ryan Cobain stepped up to take the penalty kick. Cobain sent a rocket into the bottom right corner of the net, his first of the season.
However, the Crusaders answered in the 35th minute when Joel Johnson took a pass from Jonathan Lagos for his second goal of the season. Lagos sent the ball from the left side of the box into the middle where Johnson delivered the ball just out of the reach of Kari Sveinsson making the score King 2, North Greenville 1.
In the 40th minute, King had a great chance. Luis Calderon found himself in the box, beat the keeper to the left and delivered a shot off the post denying what would have been his first goal of the season and career.
Going into the half, King led North Greenville 2-1.
Just a short seven minutes into the half, Zachary Clark hit a shot that would appear to be the highlight of the game. Eli Carrasco delivered the ball to Clark in the middle of the field where he sent a shot from 25 yards out into the top left corner of the net.
King continued to lace shots at the North Greenville (0-8, 0-4 CC) goalie and in the 64th minute, Hicks found the net again. After the ball was bouncing around in the middle of the field, Hicks collected it and passed the ball into the right side of the net for his second goal of the game, eighth of the season.
From that moment on, it was easy cruising for the Tornado. Sveinsson recorded his fourth win of the season after making two big saves in the second half.
The Tornado outshot the Crusaders 17-4 and tallied five corner kicks to North Greenville's one.
King will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Mount Olive to take on the Trojans.
