Trevecca Nazarene sneaks by the Tornado
BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's soccer team seemed to have dominated the game, but an early goal had them flustered. Trevecca Nazarene University netted one in the early minutes and saw themselves earn another in the second half to defeat the Tornado.
The weather was not looking good and it was shaping up to be a wet game but it held off and everything was up to par come start time. In the opening minutes, Trevecca Nazarene (6-3-1) got on the board. Chelsey Russom delivered a ball from the right side of the field to the feet of Brooke Gann. Gann then turned and hit a shot off the crossbar that bounced down and into the net making the score Trevecca Nazarene 1, King 0.
King then woke up and hit shot after shot at net. In the ninth minute, Rayna Spears hit a shot at goal that was saved by Liz Denton, the Trojan keeper. Kendyl Baird sent another shot at net in the 16th minute and the goalie came up with the save again.
The Tornado continued to attack and was clearly in control of the game but nothing would go their way. Going into the half, King was down 1-0 after tallying seven shots to Trevecca Nazarene's one.
To open the second half, King (6-4) continued to deliver shots. In the 51st minute,Rachel Thorpe hit a shot that was blocked and Baird delivered another right after, that sailed high of the net. Hulda Sigurdardottir sent a shot at net in the 64th minute that was saved by the Trojan keeper again.
Off a King foul, Trevecca Nazarene capitalized again. A Trojan defender delivered a ball into the box that hit off the head of a King defender and sailed over the charging Olivia Drake's head. What was an unlucky game up to that point became even more unlucky real quick.
Nothing more would happen for either team and the Tornado were defeated by the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene 2-0. King outshot Trevecca Nazarene 12 to three, four of which landed on goal for the Tornado. King also tallied five corner kicks to Trevecca Nazarene's four.
The Tornado will be on the road for the next couple of games. On Saturday, they will head to Mount Olive, N.C. to take on the University of Mount Olive at 7:00 pm. They then will travel to Limestone College and Pfeiffer University before returning back home to take on Southern Wesleyan University.
