Tribe Trips Up Tigers, 1-0
Williamsburg, Va. - William & Mary picked up a 1-0 win over Towson women's soccer on a soggy Thursday evening at Albert-Daly Field.
The Tribe's (7-1-4, 4-0 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)) Katie Johnston scored the game's only goal on a header in the 75th minute off of one of W&M's two corner kicks. The Tigers (7-7-1, 2-3 CAA) stood up to consistent pressure throughout the match.
"I think both teams had good chances, good corner kicks," said Head Coach Greg Paynter. "The second half, especially, we had them under pressure. I'm really proud of the effort we put out tonight, both the quality and the energy. Overall, I'm very pleased with the way the team competed tonight."
The Tribe out-shot the Tigers 8-3 in the first half, and 15-9 for the game. But Towson proved equal to the task throughout most of the match. Goalkeeper Erin Quinn made four of her seven saves in the opening 45 minutes. The Tigers worked hard in their attacking third, earning seven corner kicks on the evening, but they were unable to capitalize.
William & Mary, a team that had out-scored Towson 10-0 in the last two matches between the teams, was only able to find one crack in the Tiger defense. The Tribe scored off a corner kick at 74:04 when Ali Heck sent in a cross and Johnston buried it in the upper left 90.
Towson returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 13 in the Tigers' last regular-season road game, facing James Madison at 1 p.m.
