Trine Knocks off Calvin 2-0
ANGOLA, Ind. - The weather conditions were not perfect, but it was a perfect result for the Trine University men’s soccer team as they defeated defending conference champion Calvin College 2-0. The Thunder are now 7-0-2 on the season and 3-0-1 in the conference.
Just a few minutes into the start of the game the downpour of rain came. Both teams struggled to get any offense going in the wet condition. Trine managed just four shots in the first half and only one coming on goal while the Knights managed just one shot on goal on three attempts. Trine’s lone shot on goal came as senior Foster Webb’s (Auburn, Ind./Dekalb ) shot bounced through the Calvin defense and deflected off an unsuspecting Knight and into the goal.
The second half was a different story as both teams came out firing with six shots in the first 10 minutes. Then, with the ball deep in their own zone, the Knights pass was intercepted by senior Femi Adediji (Cedar Park, Tex./Vista Ridge). Adediji dribbled right and found junior Curtis Holcom (Converse, Ind./Oak Hill) on right wing. Holcom dribbled in the box and fired a shot from about 20 yards out into the bottom left corner for his fourth goal of the season.
The Knights had their opportunities in the second half as they tallied 10 shots, but senior goalkeeper Nick Thon (South Haven, Mich./South Haven) stood tall. Thon, the NCAA Division III leader in goals against average and save percent, made four saves on the afternoon. The Shutout also ties the Thunder with fellow conference school Olivet College for the national lead with eight shutouts.
Trine will look to take over the conference lead when they host Olivet on October 1 at 2:30 p.m.
