Trine Men’s Soccer and Thon Get Two Shutouts at Wabash Classic
Crawfordsville, Ind. - It was a weekend of defense for the Trine University men’s soccer team as they shutout both Wabash College and DePauw University at the Robbie Dreher Memorial Wabash Classic. The game against Wabash ended in a 0-0 tie after two overtimes while the Thunder took down DePauw 1-0.
On Saturday, Trine and Wabash played to a tie after 110 minutes in the sweltering heat. The Little Giants out-shot the Thunder 15-11 but senior goalkeeper Nick Thon (South Haven, Mich./South Haven) made five saves in the game including one in the second overtime. Trine had several opportunities in extra time but Wabash’s goalkeeper including a breakaway by junior Andre Hilson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) in the second overtime. Hilson led the Thunder with three shots while fellow junior Curtis Holcom (Converse, Ind./Oak Hill) had two shots on goal.
In game two on Sunday, Trine outlasted the Tigers despite playing a man down for the final 40 minutes of the game after senior Femi Adediji (Cedar Park, Tex./Vista Ridge) was given a red card for a hard foul just outside the box.
Midway through the opening period, it was Holcom who netted the game-winner for Trine in the 23rd minute on an assist from senior Foster Webb (Auburn, Ind./Dekalb).
Thon again played an outstanding game in goal, making nine saves on the afternoon earning the shutout for the second time in as many days.
Playing a man up allowed DePauw to out-shoot the Thunder 13-2 in the second half. The Tigers held a 20-8 shot advantage on the afternoon including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Hilson finished the weekend leading Trine with five shots taken. Holcom and Webb each tallied four shots, with all four of Holcoms’ shots coming on goal.
Trine will return to action on Friday, September 9 as they host the two-day Ketner Classic beginning at 3:00 p.m. with Manchester taking on Kalamazoo. Trine versus Transylvania will kickoff at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
Saturday will feature Kalamazoo against Transylvania at noon and Trine versus Manchester at 2:30 p.m.
