Trine Women’s Soccer Drop Season Opener 3-2
ANGOLA, Ind. - The season didn’t start the way the Trine University women’s soccer team had hoped as they fell 3-2 to Hanover College.
Hanover got on the board early in the game as they netted two goals in the first 10 minutes of the opening session. The Panthers first goal came on a bit of luck as the ball ricochet off the hands of Tine keeper senior Jen Wall (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and bounced over her head. Hanover added another goal 31 minutes into the first period to lead 3-0 at the half.
It didn’t take long for the Thunder to get back into the game as freshman Morgan Baldwin (Amanda, Ohio/Amanda-Clearcreek) found the back of the net just six minutes into the second half for her first collegiate goal. After a free kick was taken by sophomore Meredith Beer (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), Baldwin went up through traffic in the box and knocked home the header.
Trine pulled within one after another freshman, Carly Habig (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop), scored her first goal off a deflected cross pass that found the top left corner of the net. The Hanover defense clamped down on the Thunder not allowing them to score the equalizer.
Wall put up a superb effort in goal for the Thunder, stopping 12 of 15 shots on goal.
Another freshman Melissa Smile (Davisburg, Mich./Holly), had Trine’s only other shot on goal. Hanover out-shot the Thunder 23-4 in total shots and 15-3 in shots on goal.
Trine will look to bounce back as they travel to Manchester College on Saturday, September 3 for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
