Trine Women’s Soccer Wins Season Finale
ANGOLA, Ind. - It was the perfect way to end the season for the Trine University women’s soccer team as they set a school record for MIAA conference wins as they defeated Olivet College 2-0. The Thunder finish their season 5-13-2 overall and 3-11-2 in the conference.
Neither team was able to score in the first half as the Thunder defense held the Comets to just two shots in the opening period. Trine had several opportunities to score in the half as they tallied six total shots.
The Thunder broke the scoreless game when Meredith Beer (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) put home her first goal of the season. After Olivet committed a foul just outside the box, Beer took the free kick from 10 yards outside the box. Beer hammered the ball into the top right corner as the Comets keeper was unable to jump high enough to knock the ball away.
Freshman Haley Johnson (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) put the game away as she also scored her first goal of the season. After fellow freshman Morgan Baldwin (Amanda, Ohio/Amanda-Clearcreek) took the throw in, Baldwin found Johnson alone inside the box. Johnson made a quick move around the Olivet goalkeeper and pushed the ball just inside the left post.
Olivet’s best chance to score came late in the second half as the shot from about 45 yards out hit the post.
In goal for the Thunder, sophomore Kate Wegert made two saves on the afternoon while earning her second consecutive shutout.
Since becoming an NCAA member in 2004, Trine has never amassed more than a single conference win in a season. The Thunder were finally able to breakthrough against their MIAA competition this season as all three wins came against different schools. The five total wins is the most for a Trine women’s soccer team since the 2003 squad (the final team played under NAIA scholarship rules), collected eight wins.
