Trio of Goals Leads No. 9 SEU Past Mines
THE RUNDOWN
AUSTIN, Texas – Goals from Owain Hoskins, Grant Mobley and Dylan Armstrong powered the No. 9-ranked St. Edward’s men’s soccer team to victory Sunday as they shut out Colorado School of Mines, 3-0.
Hoskins struck first for the Hilltoppers in the 45’. Ty Mobley received a corner kick from Pablo Covarrubias and then lofted a pass across the 18-yard box, finding Hoskins’ head to make it 1-0, SEU.
In the 49’ another corner kick spelled doom for the Orediggers. Covarrubias took the kick again, this time finding Daniel Wakeham at the top of the penalty area. Wakeham spun a pass to the back post of the goal where Grant Mobley headed it passed the Mines’ goalkeeper.
Armstrong capped the scoring for St. Edward’s in the 63’ as he converted his second penalty-kick opportunity of the season. The Hilltoppers’ defense turned away three Orediggers’ shots in the final 27 minutes of play to preserve the shutout.
HIGHLIGHTS
· Armstrong took four shots in the game, brining his season total to two goals on 11 shots (five on goal).
· Covarrubias, Grant Mobley and Hoskins combined for six shots with two finding the frame.
· Sophomore goalkeeper William Tuffin recorded the first official shutout of his career with two saves.
· St. Edward’s created eight corner-kick opportunities compared to Mines’ two.
· Head Coach Brian Young is 6-1-1 on opening weekend over the last four seasons.
· The Hilltoppers have not lost on opening weekend since 2014.
