Tritons Come Up Short in CCAA Opener
LOS ANGELES - The UC San Diego men's soccer team fell in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday night, surrendering the only goal in the 40th minute of a 1-0 loss at Cal State L.A.
Rosario Bras scored his second goal of the season for CSULA (3-0. 1-0), finishing a header off a free kick from Marvin Sandoval. The Golden Eagles out-shot UCSD, 12-10, but the teams matched each other with five shots on-frame.
"Our guys had our moments to get a goal, but it's hard to come back in a place like Cal State L.A. when they get a goal off a set piece," said UCSD head coach Jon Pascale. "They are also a very good defensive team and I think it was hard for us to really establish a rhythm on offense."
Sam Ball led the Tritons with three shots, while Andisheh Bagheri, Adam Zernik and Tsuk Haroush each tallied two shots apiece. Josh Cohen recorded four stops in goal.
After starting the season with a 2-1 road win over Cal Baptist, UCSD (1-2, 0-1) has fallen victim to its second straight 1-0 loss.
"L.A. is one of the few places that make you adjust a lot to their style of play," said Pascale. "I think Sunday's match will suit our team well."
The Tritons will look to get back on track Sunday when they face Cal State San Bernardino on the road at 11:30 a.m. UCSD is 0-5-1 in its last six contests against CSUSB.
