Troy Soccer Downs Francis Marion, Wins Seven
Mobile, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team won its seventh consecutive match by defeating Francis Marion 3-1 on Friday in the Jaguar Classic on the campus of the University of South Alabama.
The Trojans (7-2) fired off 23 shots en route to extending its program-best winning streak to seven games, which also matching the program’s longest unbeaten streak.
“I don’t think the score reflects where we are as a team. We had a couple of chances that we failed to score, but these are games to learn from,” head coach Jason Hamilton said. “When things aren’t going you’re way, you have to overcome that and move on to the next one.”
Junior Chelsey Williams opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a chip over the goalkeeper’s head on a pass from Jasmine Fahrnbauer. The goal was the fourth of the season for Williams and 21st of her career tying her with Mary Morris for second all-time in Troy history. Williams’ 49 career points ties her with Jill Pinder for second all-time.
Five minutes later, Alissa Jones stripped a Francis Marion defender of the ball at the top of the penalty box and scored her seventh goal of the year. The goal – the 15th of her career – moved her into seventh all-time at Troy.
Francis Marion (0-6) responded in the 39th minute finding the net off a corner to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Trojans.
In the 42nd minute Payton Donley drove home her second goal of the season off a corner from Jane Latif. Troy nearly extended its lead twice late in the match but shots by Abby Reynolds and Jones banged off the post and were cleared away.
Freshman goalkeeper Mikki Lewis played 72 solid minutes in the net for Troy and picked up her seventh win of the year. Freshman Megan Charlton took over for the final 17 minutes.
Troy will return to action on Sunday in the Jaguar Classic finale as the team takes on North Florida at 2 p.m.
