Tulsa Battles Central Michigan to 1-1 Tie
The Tulsa women’s soccer team battled Central Michigan to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the season opener on Friday evening in the Jayhawk Invitational at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan.
Madison Costner struck first for the Chippewas as she scored on a breakaway off a pass from Sarah Mitchell at the 27:58 mark. Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the half as CMU took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Addyson Guthrie evened the score in the 64th minute as she drilled a shot off the cross bar and into the goal off a 30-yard pass from Reagan Whitlow.
The two teams sparred for the remaining 26 minutes of regulation and through two overtime periods before the game ended in a draw.
Central Michigan had a 10-4 lead in shots in the first half, but Tulsa took a 10-5 advantage in shots in the second period, and then CMU had an 8-1 lead in the two overtime periods.
“It was the tale of two halves,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We played decent in the first half, but gave up a goal. In the second half we dug in, created a lot more chances, picked up the pace and tried to press more. We had a good opportunity to score on a shot from Christina Holmes in overtime, but her shot went just wide. We are pretty banged up, but we’ll have to recover quickly for Sunday’s game.”
The Chippewas finished with a 23-15 lead in shots, while both teams had nine shots on goal, and CMU had an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Anna Williams had a team-best three shots, while Tana Dake, Ashlyn Heckman and Edie Opie both added two attempts. Rebecca Defer logged all 110 minutes between the posts and picked up eight saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, August 20 against Nebraska. Game time is set for 10:00 am in Lawrence, Kan.
