Tulsa Battles Illinois State to 1-1 Tie
Tulsa and Illinois State battled it out on the women’s soccer pitch for 110 minutes, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 1-1-1 on the season, while ISU moved to 1-1-2 overall.
“I am not going to say we are a young team, but we are inexperienced,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We are just getting used to playing with each other, so I thought going into halftime down a goal was a bit unfortunate, but we were also playing against a 15-20 mph wind. We sorted out a few things defensively at halftime and it helped us not only defensively but in the attack as we were able to get the goal back. It was a great effort by the team to battle it out because Sunday games are this way, and it is all about growing and getting better as we head into conference play.”
Angel Krell put the Redbirds on the board at the 17:02 mark as she chipped the ball in from 12 yards out over the goalkeeper off a pass from Sarah LaFayette. ISU maintained the 1-0 lead until freshman Alijah Oliver knocked in her first collegiate goal from one yard out off a cross from Mia Darden to tie the score at 1-1 in the 68th minute. Neither team found the back of the net in the final 22 minutes of regulation or either 10-minute overtime period to end the contest in a tie.
Both teams had 19 shots, while Tulsa had a 7-6 edge in shots on goal and a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Alyssa Kaiser and Anna Williams led the Hurricane attack with three shots apiece, while five others had two attempts, and three players had one shot. Mica MacKay logged all 110 minutes in goal and picked up five saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, August 31 against Arkansas State. Game time is set for 5:30 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
