Tulsa Battles Oral Roberts to 1-1 Tie
The Tulsa women’s soccer team battled crosstown rival Oral Roberts to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Friday night at the Case Soccer Stadium on the ORU campus. TU moved to 1-6-2 on the season, while the Eagles moved to 2-6-1 overall.
“It’s a crosstown rival so we knew what tonight was going to be, a game about heart and a lot of scrapping,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We were fortunate to get the early goal on a great cross from Anna to Rachel. Our emphasis tonight was to attack and not give up many goals, and we wanted to get 20 shots and get a good chance in the first minutes, which is when we scored. We worked on some things in practice this week and the players stuck to it. We are getting better, which we can take into conference play. I was proud of the effort, but now we have to recover and get ready for Sunday.”
Rachel Thun-Blankenship put Tulsa on the board as she punched one into the back of the net off a cross from Anna Martin with just 4:33 ticked off the clock. TU maintained that lead until Rachael Baker evened the score in the 49th minute for Oral Roberts. Neither team found the back of the net for the remaining 41:04 of regulation or the two 10-minute overtime periods to end the game in the tie.
ORU had a 42-19 lead in shots, including a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal, and a 9-3 lead in corner kicks.
Thun-Blankenship had a team-leading five shots, four of which were on goal, while Ashlyn Heckman added three attempts. Courtney McKeon logged all 110 minutes in goal and picked up 10 saves, while the TU team was credited with one save.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 17 at Missouri State. Game time is set for 1:00 pm in Springfield, Mo.
