Tulsa Battles Temple to 2-2 Tie
Ashlyn Heckman and Eden Opie both scored their first goals on the season en route to a 2-2 double-overtime tie with Temple on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane moved to 3-10-3 on the season and 1-4-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Owls moved to 5-6-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the league.
“I thought we looked good, especially in the first half when we created some really good chances,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We knew heading into this weekend that it was going to be tough because of the lack of players and depth, but I was proud of the effort from the girls that played a lot of minutes and I was excited the two girls got their first goals of the year.”
Ashlyn Heckman put Tulsa on the board at the 57:16 mark as she shot from two yards out off a through ball passed into the box by Valiree Morris. The Bulls’ Kayla Cunningham evened the score just 25 seconds later as she shot from 22 yards out into the upper right corner.
In the 71st minute Eden Opie scored from eight yards off a cross from Alyssa Kaiser, but Temple tied it up again in the 83rd minute on a score by Gabriella McKeown.
“When we went up 1-0, we knew we couldn’t have a lull and we did and we got scored on on the very first possession,” Cussen said. “We continued to fight and got the second goal, but our legs were tired and the team was spent.”
Tana Dake had a team-best six shots, while Heckman added five attempts, and Rachel Thun-Blankenship, Opie and Kaiser all had three attempts. Rebecca Defer logged all 110 minutes in goal and picked up 10 saves.
Temple had a 24-22 lead in shots, while both teams had 12 shots on goal, and Tulsa had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, October 12 at Cincinnati. Game time is set for 6:00 pm in Cincinnati, Ohio.
