Tulsa Blanks Grambling State, 3-0
The Tulsa women’s soccer team captured a 3-0 win over Grambling State on Friday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 3-1 on the season, while GSU fell to 3-2 overall.
“It was a tough game,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “Grambling State does a good job. They are athletic and they ran at us for 90 minutes. I felt like in the first half our goal was against the run of play, and they got a shot or two before we got an opportunity. After that we settled in and after halftime we played a lot better, creating two more goals and several more chances to score. I am also very proud of the shutout. Mica had some big saves that kept us in the game and the back line was solid tonight.”
Neha Igwe put the Golden Hurricane on the board with just 5:16 ticked off the clock as she picked up the ball at midfield, dribbled down to 10 yards out and then scored from left to right. Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the half as TU took a 1-0 advantage into the locker room.
Emilie Torres added a score in the 49thminute as she shot from 12 yards out off a long pass from Alyssa Kaiser, and then Mia Darden knocked in a goal from two yards out off a cross from Jordan Martinez in the 74thminute.
Tulsa had a 15-7 lead in shots, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, while both teams had two corner kicks.
Averee Dubach had a team-high three shots, while Reagan Whitlow, Liliana Fernandez and Igwe all added two attempts, and six others took one shot. Mica MacKay logged all 90 minutes in goal, picked up four saves and earned the shutout.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, September 8 against Lamar. Game time is set for 1:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
