Tulsa Defeats Mercer, 2-0, in Season Opener
The Tulsa women’s soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 win over Mercer on Friday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 1-0 on the season, while the Bears fell to 0-1 overall.
Tulsa had seven shots in the first half, but wasn’t able to capitalize on them, but did hold Mercer to just one attempt in the first 45 minutes.
Christina Holmes put the Golden Hurricane on the board as she headed in a goal off a cross from Roman Edwards at the 60:24 mark. Rachel Thun gave TU a two-goal cushion in the 76th minute as she dribbled around the keeper and punched the ball into the back of the net.
Tulsa had a 20-1 advantage in shots, including a 7-1 lead in shots on goal, and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Tine Schryvers had a team-best four shots, two of which were on goal, while Tana Dake, Rachel Thun and Alexa Sidorakis all had three attempts. Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes between the posts, picked up one save and earned the shutout.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, August 23 against Missouri Southern. The game is set for 5:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
