Tulsa Dominates UConn, 3-0
Valiree Morris had two goals and Anna Williams added the third for the Tulsa women’s soccer team as they dominated UConn, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. The Golden Hurricane moved to 7-9-1 on the season and 3-5 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Huskies fell to 3-13 overall and 1-6 in the league.
“It was a strong road win,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “UConn has had some injuries this season, but they got those players back this weekend and gave #22 Memphis a good game on Thursday so we knew it would be a better UConn team than their record indicated. It was UConn’s senior day, as well as their last day in their current home stadium, so they had a lot to play for, but we came out ready to play and took control from the start.”
“There were 15-25 mph sustained winds throughout the game, but we were able to score in the first six minutes against the wind. It was probably the best game I’ve seen our midfield play all season. We kept possession really well, even against the wind, the forwards finished their chances, the back line was strong and Kay Jones made some big saves in goal. I was definitely proud of the effort and performance, and of the fact that we played like we are capable of playing and did so for the full 90 minutes.”
Morris put Tulsa on the board at the 6:13 mark as she headed in a cross from Neha Igwe. Morris then scored again in the 20th minute as she picked up the ball that was bouncing around in the box, settled it and shot from 12 yards out. Her shot went from left to right, bounced off the post and went in.
Williams put TU up 3-0 at the 73:47 mark. Mia Darden played it from the top of the box and passed it wide to Williams who shot from 18 yards out on the left side.
“Val got two really good goals today,” Cussen said. “I am glad her persistence has paid off and hopefully we can play more games after next Saturday to keep the momentum going.”
Morris had a team-best four shots, while Igwe added two attempts and four others had one shot. Jones logged all 90 minutes in goal, picked up six saves and earned her first career shutout. The shutout was just the second for the Hurricane this season after posting a 2-0 win over Oklahoma Baptist on August 23.
UConn had a 13-10 lead in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal, and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Tulsa will conclude the regular season at #22 Memphis on Friday, October 26 beginning at 7:00 pm in Memphis, Tenn.
