Tulsa Drops 2-0 Decision to Cincinnati
The No. 5 seed Tulsa women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 4 seed Cincinnati in the American Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinal game on Tuesday afternoon at Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas. TU concluded the season with a 13-6-1 record, while UC moved to 12-5-4 overall.
“It was really the tale of two halves,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We got outshot 7-3 in the first half and then we outshot them 8-3 in the second frame. There was more of a sense of urgency in the second half. We created an early opportunity in the second half that could have made it 1-1, but it hit the post. If we would have scored that one it would have made the whole game different. I was proud of the way they kept fighting and felt like we were in it until the final whistle.”
Danielle Rotheram put the Bearcats on the board with 27:49 ticked off the clock as she picked up a forward pass in the box, made a cut back and punched it in from 15 yards out into the lower right corner.
Jaycie Brown gave Cincinnati a two-goal cushion as she scored from 27 yards out into the top shelf off a pass from Julie Gavorski in the 51st minute.
Tulsa had an 11-10 lead in shots, while the Bearcats had a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal, and TU had a 6-2 lead in corner kicks.
Tana Dake had a team-best three shots, while Kajal Parmar added two attempts and six others had one shot. Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes between the posts and picked up three saves.
Nine Tulsa women’s soccer players ended their collegiate career today, including Roman Edwards, Elisabetta Impagliazzo, Caitlin Jancuska, Lauren King, Kajal Parmar, Nikki Pokipala, Katy Riojas, Alexa Sidorakis and Madison Smith.
“We knew all season that this was a special group and a special year, and it was,” Cussen said. “We are disappointed the season is over because we have such a special group of kids. For the nine seniors ending their career, this group has been special and they have helped change this program since they were freshmen. All nine of them contributed at some point throughout their career. I was especially proud of the seven of them that got to be here this week and the fact that they got to end it on the field together.”
