Tulsa Earns 2-1 Victory Over SMU
Rachel Thun and Danielle Hoover each scored a goal to give Tulsa a 2-1 win over SMU on Thursday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 10-1-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs fell to 4-5-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the league.
“It was tale of two halves,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “Out of our 14 shots, nine were in the second half. I was proud of the fact that we came out and played better in the second half. Rachel and Danielle both had great goals, we created some good chances and we have some positives moving forward.”
Thun put the Golden Hurricane on the board with just 7:11 ticked off the clock as she drilled in a 30-yard shot off a clear by the Mustangs. SMU’s Gabrielle Petrucelli evened the score in the 20th minute as she chipped in a score from three yards out. Neither team found the back of the net in the remainder of the half and the teams went into the break tied, 1-1.
TU’s Hoover tallied her first collegiate goal and the game-winner at the 68:02 mark as she shot from two yards out into an open net. Kajal Parmar picked up the assist.
Tulsa had a 14-9 lead in shots, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal, and had a 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
Thun had a team-best five shots, while Parmar added three attempts and Madison Smith had two shots. Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes in goal and had four saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, October 4 against Houston. Game time is set for 1:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
