Tulsa Earns 2-1 Win Over Oral Roberts
Tulsa’s 19th-ranked women’s soccer team earned a 2-1 win over crosstown rival Oral Roberts on Sunday night at the Case Soccer Complex on the ORU campus in front of a stadium-best 1,249 crowd. TU moved to 9-1 on the season, while ORU fell to 4-3-2 overall.
“We knew this weekend was going to be a tough weekend, but I was proud of the result tonight,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We played a little bit better tonight than we did on Friday night against Oklahoma. I am proud of the fact that we stuck to our game plan and were successful. It is exciting to be 9-1 and 19th in the country, and we are thrilled with where our program is and that we are getting recognition, but we start back over essentially in conference play this week. Conference is what matters and we play in one of the top-six conferences in the nation so every game is going to be a battle.”
Alexa Sidorakis struck early for the Golden Hurricane as she punched one in from 18 yards out on the right side off a pass from Lauren King with just 3:04 ticked off the clock. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the rest of the half as TU took a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Madison Smith gave TU a two-goal cushion in the 65th minute as she drilled in a goal from 25 yards out on the right side into the upper left corner off a pass from Rachel Thun. Twenty minutes later Kayla Keller got one back for the Golden Eagles, but it wasn’t enough as TU held on for the 2-1 win.
King and Tana Dake each had a team-best three shots, while Smith added two attempts. Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes between the posts and picked up three saves.
ORU had a 14-12 lead in shots, while Tulsa had an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. ORU had a 2-1 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 24 against Memphis to open American Athletic Conference play. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
