Tulsa Earns 2-1 Win Over Temple
Rachel Thun scored two quick goals, including one in the 85th minute and one in the 87th minute, to give Tulsa a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Temple on Thursday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane moved to 12-3-1 on the season and 3-2-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Owls fell to 9-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the league.
“It was a tale of two halves again,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We started out slow, unfortunately, and we had the wind, but we created two shots with the wind. We didn’t have a sense of urgency, but we were able to get our urgency back in the second half and we created 10 shots against the wind. For our first goal, it was a great heads-up play by Rachel. We’ve talked about shooting early if we are onside and it was a real soccer-smart play. Then she showed a lot of composure for her second goal and she just passed it into the back of the net. I am also proud of our team and their fight to win this game, as well as proud of our 10 seniors and what they’ve helped us accomplish in their time here.”
Elana Falcone put Temple on the board with 18:02 off the clock as she shot from 12 yards out off a pass from Gabrielle McKeown. Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the half as the Owls took a 1-0 advantage into the break.
After being down 1-0 for over 66 minutes, Tulsa was fouled and awarded a free kick just outside the box. Thun took a quick free kick and the ball went into an open net to tie the score at the 84:24 mark. Thun scored again just over two minutes later as she shot the ball into the back of the net from 10 yards out to give the Hurricane the win.
Thun had a team-best four shots, while Tana Dake added three attempts, and Lauren King and Madison Smith both had two shots. Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up four saves.
Both teams had 12 shots, while the Owls edged the Hurricane 5-4 in shots on goal and 4-3 in corner kicks.
After the game Tulsa honored its nine seniors, Roman Edwards, Elisabetta Impagliazzo, Caitlin Jancuska, Lauren King, Kajal Parmar, Nikki Pokipala, Katy Riojas, Alexa Sidorakis and Madison Smith, as well as senior manager Paige Martin.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, October 18 against 15th-ranked UConn. Game time is set for 1:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
