Tulsa Earns 4-1 Win Over Sam Houston State
Mia Darden netted two goals, while Anna Williams and Valiree Morris each added a score to give the Tulsa women’s soccer team a 4-1 win over Sam Houston State on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 2-2-1 on the season, while SHSU fell to 1-3-1 overall.
“I was proud of the entire group effort,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We’ve been talking about playing on the field with unity. This group is so tight off the field so we wanted to see that translate onto the field and things came together today. I was really proud of the goal production and the fact that we were solid in the back, and the way we limited their chances on goal.”
Darden tallied her first goal of the season at the 7:05 mark as she drilled in a shot from two yards out off a pass from Williams to give the Golden Hurricane an early 1-0 lead that TU maintained at the break.
In the second half, Williams posted her own goal in the 55th minute off a shot from 25 yards out, and then two minutes later Darden scored again off a rebound attempt by Emily Brandenburg. Morris’ goal came in the 73rd minute off a forward pass from Reagan Whitlow.
The Bearkats tallied their lone goal of the contest at the 76:07 mark as Lexi Bullard scored off a pass from Sammi Mayock.
Tulsa had a 27-10 lead in shots, including a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal, and a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.
Darden had a team-best six shots, three of which were on goal, while Whitlow added five attempts, and Williams and Neha Igwe each had three shots. Mica MacKay logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up two saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 7 against Louisiana in the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas.
