Tulsa Edges Oklahoma Baptist, 3-2
Three Tulsa players scored a goal to give the Golden Hurricane a 3-2 win over Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 5-3 on the season, while OBU fell to 1-3-1 overall.
“I am excited not only for the result, but how we played,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We came out and scored in the first minute, which was encouraging. We scored three goals from three different people, we were able to play a lot of people, and we were able to try some different combinations of players. Overall this was a good game leading into conference play in the next couple of weeks.”
Anna Williams put Tulsa on the board with just 42 seconds ticked off the clock as she flicked in a combination from Ashlan Hustava to Mia Darden. OBU’s Tori Kitchel evened the score nearly 32 minutes later as she picked up the ball 40 yards out, dribbled forward and shot from 25 yards out up the middle to tie the score heading into the break.
Aubrey Lechlider got one back for Tulsa as she headed in a cross from Tristyn Edgar in the 64thminute, but Kitchel once again evened the score for the Bison as she headed in a score from five yards out just four minutes later.
Liliana Fernandez netted the game-winner in the 79thminute as she shot from 18 yards out up the middle.
Tulsa had an 8-7 lead in shots on goal and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks, but Oklahoma Baptist had a 17-14 lead in shots.
Fernandez had a team-best five shots, four of which were on goal, while Williams, Darden and Lechlider each had two attempts. Mica MacKay logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up five saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 20 against Kansas City. Game time is set for 5:30 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
