Tulsa Falls to #15 UConn, 2-1 (2OT)
The Tulsa women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to 15th-ranked UConn in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU fell to 12-4-1 on the season and 3-3-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Huskies moved to 14-2 overall and 6-1 in the league.
“We knew going in that UConn is a very good team; they wouldn’t be ranked that high if they weren’t,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We talked about playing with a sense of urgency and I thought we did that. We didn’t sit back. We put together not only 90 good minutes but we created good chances even in overtime. Of course we are disappointed with the result, but I thought the team played with a lot of heart.”
Tana Dake put Tulsa on the board at the 23:02 mark as she drilled in a shot from 18 yards out off a pass from Alexa Sidorakis. TU held onto the lead and took a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Andrea Plucenik evened the score in the 49th minute as she shot from six yards out off a pass from Liana Hinds, but neither team found the back of the net in the final 31 minutes of regulation play to force overtime.
In the second overtime period, Samantha McGuire scored the game-winner as she shot from 12 yards out up the middle off a pass from Stephanie Ribeiro.
Dake had a team-best five shots, while Rachel Thun added two attempts. Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up six saves.
UConn had a 22-10 lead in shots, including an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal, and a 4-3 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, October 23 against East Carolina. Game time is set for 6:00 pm in Greenville, N.C.
