Tulsa Falls to #18 USF, 2-1
The Tulsa men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to 18th-ranked USF on Wednesday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU fell to 4-5-2 on the season and 0-2-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bulls moved to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the league.
“We started out the game well, but gave away a bad first goal,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We have to continue to improve defensively. We came back and Juan scored a very nice goal. We controlled much of the game and eventually these things will turn our way, I still believe that. We’ve virtually controlled every game except one that we’ve played in, but we have to find a way to score the first goal and be more solid in our decision making in the back. I am proud of the guys the way they played, they responded well when we went a goal down. We just need to continue to grow as a team.”
Gabriel Carlsson put USF on the board with 16:45 ticked off the clock as he picked up the ball off a defender and shot from 12 yards out into the lower left corner. Juan Sanchez evened the score just over two minutes later as he curved the ball into the upper left corner from 16 yards out on the right side. Neither team found the back of the net in the remainder of the half to go into the break tied, 1-1.
Nazeem Bartman gave the Bulls the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute as he shot into an open net from 10 yards out off a pass from Eduardo Maceira.
Tulsa had an 11-7 lead in shots, while both teams had four shots on goal, and USF had a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.
Geoffrey Dee had a team-best three shots, while Miguel Velasquez added two attempts. Marcel Da Silva played all 90 minutes in goal for his first collegiate contest and picked up two saves.
Tulsa will return to action against UCF on Saturday, October 10. Game time is set for 12 noon Central in Orlando, Fla.
