Tulsa Falls to Oklahoma, 2-1
September 18, 2015
Tulsa’s 19th-ranked women’s soccer team lost their first game of the season, a 2-1 decision to Oklahoma, on Friday night at John Crain Field in Norman, Okla. TU fell to 8-1 on the season, while OU moved to 4-4 overall.
“We came into a tough environment and gave up an goal early, which is something that we talked about not wanting to do, but the girls did a good job and responded well,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We got that goal back and at halftime we felt pretty good about being 1-1. We didn’t come out with that same energy in the second half and didn’t create enough chances to get on top.”
Laura Rayfield put the Sooners on the board with just 6:19 ticked off the clock as she drilled in a free kick, but Christina Holmes evened the score in the 31st minute as she punched in a goal from inside the box. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the final 14:51 for a 1-1 score at the break.
“Christina does a good job in the run of play and tonight found a gap as a shot came off the crossbar and ran through for the goal,” Cussen said.
Victoria Bowman put OU up again at the 62:03 mark, which would be the game-winner.
Lana Bermel had a team-best two shots, while four others had one attempt. Courtney McKeon played all 90 minutes in goal and picked up seven saves.
The Sooners had a 20-6 lead in shots, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal, and edged TU, 3-2 in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action against crosstown rival Oral Roberts on Sunday, Sept. 20. Game time is set for 7:00 pm on the ORU campus.
