Tulsa Falls to USF, 2-1, in Double Overtime
The Tulsa women’s soccer team battled USF for 109:47, but dropped a 2-1 decision in double overtime on Thursday night at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The Golden Hurricane fell to 6-5 on the season and 0-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bulls moved to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.
“We scored in the first three minutes, and no doubt about it USF is a good team, but we gutted it out defensively and still attacked and created chances,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We played our hearts out and left it all out on the field. For us to come and play like we played shows the heart and character of this team, and I am really proud of the effort. The challenge now is to rebound from today and get ready for Sunday.”
Reagan Whitlow gave Tulsa an early 1-0 lead as she scored on a combination from Liliana Fernandez and Kayla Fernandez with just 2:46 ticked off the clock. Aubrey Megrath evened the score just over 10 minutes later off a pass from Andrea Hauksdottir.
The two teams battled for the next 98 minutes off the clock and with just 13-seconds remaining in the second 10-minute overtime period Hauksdottir drilled in a penalty kick to give USF the win.
Whitlow had a team-best four shots, while Liliana Fernandez added two attempts and seven others had one attempt. Mica MacKay logged all 109:47 between the posts and picked up 10 saves.
