Tulsa Stumbles in 3-0 Loss to Kansas State
The Tulsa women’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Kansas State on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU fell to 4-4-1 on the season, while KSU moved to 4-3-2 overall.
“It is disappointing,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We’ve played some really good teams over the years and have never been outshot 11-0 in the first half. Give credit to Kansas State, they came out and had a lot of energy, but we didn’t play like we are capable of playing. Going into halftime down 1-0 we felt semi-encouraged because we felt like we could play better and we had more energy in us. We came out in the second half with more urgency, and outshot them in the second half, but we were a bit unlucky. We hit the post and the keeper made a big save on another opportunity, so we felt like it could have even been 2-2 at some point. We are discouraged with the outcome, but if we can play like we did in the second half I think we’ll be okay moving forward.”
Brookelyn Entz put the Wildcats on the board at the 19:26 mark as she shot from five yards out on the left side into the lower right corner off a forward pass from Megan Kalkofen. KSU took the 1-0 lead into the break. Maddie Souder made it a two-goal cushion in the 64th minute and then Ashley Zane made it a 3-0 game at the 71:36 mark.
KSU outshot Tulsa, 11-0, in the first half, but TU had a 12-10 lead in shots in the second frame. K-State finished with a 21-12 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 lead in shots on goal, and an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Anna Williams had a team-best three shots, while Emily Brandenburg, Addyson Guthrie and Reagan Whitlow all came in off the bench and had two attempts.
Mica MacKay logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up six saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, September 20 against ECU in the American Athletic Conference opener. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
