Tulsa Tops Missouri State, 3-0
The Tulsa women’s soccer team topped Missouri State, 3-0, on Friday night at the Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium in Springfield, Mo. TU moved to 5-0 on the season to tie the best start in school history set last year, while MSU fell to 2-2 overall.
“I was really proud of the way we played,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We felt like if we stuck to the game plan we’d score some goals tonight. They stuck with it and we scored three goals. Rachel played a really good ball to Christina, which we’ve been working on this week, but the rest of the half we didn’t really put our stamp on the game. In the second half we did a good job of keeping possession and creating good opportunities. We also worked on competing in the air this week and to see Darienne get the header was. And the final goal showed that we were there to play for 90 minutes so I was proud of that as well.”
Christina Holmes put Tulsa on the board with just 3:40 ticked off the clock as Rachel Thun threaded the ball through the defenders and Holmes one-timed the ball into the back of the net. This was Holmes fourth goal of the season.
Neither team was able to tally a score in the remainder of the half as TU took the 1-0 advantage into the break.
In the second frame, Darienne Chapman headed in a corner kick taken by Lana Bermel in the 62nd minute, while Thun added a score at the 84:05 mark off a pass from Elisabetta Impagliazzo. This was Chapman’s first goal and Thun’s third goal on the year.
Tulsa had a 15-10 lead in shots, while both teams had seven shots on goal, and TU took all five corner kicks.
Carlie Cook led the Golden Hurricane with four shots, while Thun added three attempts and Holmes had two shots. Rebecca Defer logged all 90 minutes in goal, had seven saves and earned her third shutout on the season.
Tulsa will return home to host Central Arkansas on Sunday, Sept. 6 beginning at 2:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
