Tulsa Tops Missouri State, 3-2 (2OT)
September 17, 2017
The Tulsa women’s soccer team captured a 3-2 double-overtime win over Missouri State on Sunday afternoon at the Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium in Springfield, Mo. TU moved to 2-6-2 on the season, while MSU fell to 4-7 overall.
“I’m of course just happy for the girls,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We keep telling them good things will happen if we keep fighting hard, and they have had a tremendously positive attitude. They know no game is easy and I’m proud of the fight they’ve shown in these last two rivalry games. We haven’t had the same lineup twice this year because of injuries so it’s hard to get consistency when you are trying new things each game. The girls have handled it well and are willing to adapt. Tomorrow we start back at 0-0 because all that matters now is what we do in conference play.”
With the win, Cussen picked up his 200th career win as a Division I coach.
“I am thrilled to get my 200th win, but that just says I’ve had really good assistant coaches and really good players in my time as a head coach,” Cussen added. “Individual awards are team awards and I think about my time at both ORU and TU and I’ve had great staffs who have brought in great kids. I’d give them all back if I could have a healthy team right now. They are putting in the work and are a fun group to be around so I want them to be in the hunt for a conference championship. I’m more excited to be the winningest coach at both programs because that means more than the 200th win.”
Addyson Guthrie put the Golden Hurricane on the board with just 4:19 ticked off the clock as she punched in a free ball in the box. A lightening delay in the 24th minute put both teams in the locker room for 30 minutes, but TU came out and maintained the lead for the remainder of the first half.
Brooke Zimmerman evened the score in the 54th minute before Danielle Hoover put Tulsa up once again on her own corner kick at the 62:56 mark. Just over six minutes later a score by Mary Disidore for MSU tied the game up at 2-2 on a penalty kick.
The two teams battled for the remaining 27:04 of regulation and 18:27 of overtime before an own goal by MSU tallied the game winner. Christina Holmes toe-kicked the ball, which was heading into the goal before a defender kicked the ball off another defender and into back of the net.
Missouri State had a 26-14 lead in shots, including a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal, and a 13-5 lead in corner kicks.
Holmes and Ashlyn Heckman both had a team-best three shots, while Guthrie and Hoover added two attempts a piece. Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up seven saves.
“We challenged all the goalkeepers this week to make saves and keep us in the game, and Courtney has done that,” Cussen said. “She has come up with some big saves.”
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, September 21 against Houston to begin American Athletic Conference play. The TU-UH match will be played at 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
