Tulsa Women’s Soccer Team Falls to UCF, 3-1
The Tulsa women’s soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to UCF on Sunday afternoon at the UCF Soccer Complex in Orlando, Fla. TU fell to 11-3-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Knights moved to 8-5-1 overall and 3-3 in the league.
“We came out a little flat in the first half and got scored on early,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “You can’t let the home team get the momentum like that. We made some adjustments at halftime on the attack and defensively, and we came out and played better in the second frame. Lauren scored a quick goal to make it 1-1 and we felt good about the game, but they got a free kick and scored on a bicycle kick to put us down 2-1. We were creating chances and we weren’t out of it, but they scored again on a PK, which really hurt us. UCF is a good team, but I am disappointed with how we played in the first half and in the result.”
Carol Rodrigues put UCF on the board with just 3:54 ticked off the clock on a header off a corner kick taken by Madison Barney. Neither team found the back of the net in the remainder of the half as the Knights took a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Lauren King tied the contest with 1:03 off the clock in the second frame as she punched one into the back of the net off a cross from Lana Bermel. Just 3:21 later Rodrigues scored her second goal of the contest to put UCF up 2-1, and then Ashley Spivey gave the Knights a two-goal cushion in the 56th minute on a penalty kick.
Tana Dake had a team-best three shots, while Rachel Thun and Caitlin Jancuska both had two attempts. Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up eight saves.
UCF had a 23-12 lead in shots, including an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal, and a 6-3 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, October 15 against Temple. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
