Tulsa’s Upset Bid Falls Short to #24 USF 2-1
Tulsa, Oklahoma – The Tulsa women’s soccer team came up short, falling to #24 USF, 2-1, on Thursday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 6-7-1 on the season and 2-3 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bulls moved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the league.
“It was a tale of two halves because we allowed them to play their game in the first half,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We made some good adjustments at halftime, but with a ranked opponent you can’t just play well for 45 minutes. USF is a very good team and rightfully ranked, but I felt like after we made those adjustments we played with them. I was very proud of the way we did play in the second half, and we created two or three chances that could have turned the game to our favor. We have to find a way to put 90 minutes together like we did last week against SMU.”
Kelli Burney put the Bulls on the board at the 5:47 mark as she headed in a corner kick taken by Andrea Hauksdottir. Hauksdottir also earned an assist on USF’s next goal as she passed the ball to Sydney Nasello, who crossed it to Bri Blethen who shot from 18 yards out in the 25th minute.
Anna Williams got one back for Tulsa as she drilled in a penalty kick at the 74:18 mark. TU also had a shot that went into the back of the net earlier in the contest, but the Hurricane was called for offsides.
USF had a 16-7 lead in shots, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal, and a 9-2 lead in corner kicks.
Williams had a team-best two shots, while five others had one attempt. Mica MacKay logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up five saves.
After the game TU honored seniors Danielle Hoover, Jorja Hughes and Anna Martin. The trio have been a part of 30 wins, including 15 shutouts, in their four seasons with at least four games remaining in the season.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, October 14 against UCF. Game time is set for 1:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
