U20 WNT to play two matches against Japan
The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team will come together from Aug. 4-12 at U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center at StubHub Center for a training camp that will feature two full international matches against the Japan U-20 WNT.
The USA will face the Japanese on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 11 at 12 Noon. Both matches will take place on Field #3 (David Vanole Field). Admission and parking are free to the public.
The matches against Japan will pit the USA, the country that won the last FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup against the country that hosted the tournament, but the Americans have just one hold-over from the last cycle in central defender Cari Roccaro, who played 422 minutes in Japan while starting four of the five matches she played. Roccaro is the most capped player in the current pool having played 20 international matches at the U-20 level for the USA.
U.S. head coach Michelle French has called up 23 total players for the event and will add one more before the camp begins. All but one of the players named will be in college this fall, with the exception of midfielder Andi Sullivan, who is a rising senior. The roster includes 10 players who were a member of the USA’s 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Team that played in Azerbaijan, including midfielder Morgan Andrews, who was recently chosen as the 2012-13 Gatorade National Girls’ High School Athlete of the Year.
The USA is preparing for the eight-team CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament that will send the top three finishers to 2014 FIFA U-20 World Cup Women’s World Cup in Canada. The qualifying competition will be held from January 9-19, 2014, in the Cayman Islands.
Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are age-eligible for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
