U20s Advance to World Cup Semifinals
The U.S. U20 WNT capped off a remarkable comeback on Sunday at the World Cup.
Trailing 2-0 deep into stoppage time, goals from Jordynn Dudley and Ally Sentnor tied the game. After 30 minutes of extra time, the USA advanced thanks to a 3-1 win over Germany in a shootout.
There was minimal separation between the two sides through the first 60 minutes, as the two sides traded possession in search of an opening goal. That would go to the Germans in the 61st minute. Gisele Thompson was whistled for a foul on Loreen Bender in the penalty area. Cora Zicai beat Teagan Wy to put Germany out in front.
Neither side was able to scored in the remaning 30 minutes. After the fourth official indicated eight minutes of stoppage time, Bender double Germany's lead.
Just when it look like all hope was gone, and the U.S. journey was over, Dudley cut into the lead six minutes into stoppage time. Ally Lemos lofted a ball into space over the German back line, and the Florida State striker was able to control possession and make it a 2-1 game.
Less than two minutes after, Sentnor tied the game. She was just able to beat the German goalkeeper to the ball off a deflected cross by substitue Madeline Dahlien.
