What is there to motivate players when your team has no competition to gear up for? Well, a figurative carrot for one thing.
U.S. U23 Women’s National Team head coach Randy Waldrum does not have a World Cup or Olympics to gear his squad for. Instead, he has the opportunity to mold players for the full national team.
Thanks to a change in the guard at the top of the U.S. Soccer pyramid, head coach Tom Sermanni is heralding in the new generation of players.
Recently, Julie Johnston and Crystal Dunn made the jump into the top team, as the new head coach looks more open to bringing youthful exuberance into the squad. The fact that former teammates at this level are now playing on the big stage was not lost on the players at the U23 WNT camp in Carson, California last week.
Waldrum called it “the carrot” to dangle in front of the players.
