UC San Diego Men Roll to First CCAA Win, 4-0
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego scored four times in an incredible span of 16:30 during the first half and eased past Stanislaus State, 4-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's soccer action Sunday at Triton Soccer Stadium.
With its first conference victory of 2017, reigning champion UC San Diego improved to 3-1-2 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA. Stanislaus State dropped to an even 2-2-2 overall and a winless 0-1-1 in league play.
The Tritons had seen their 18-match home unbeaten streak dating back to a 2-1 defeat on Sept. 27, 2015, in fact to Stan State, snapped by Chico State in their CCAA opener on Friday evening. Evidently displeased, they took that frustration out on the visiting Warriors and reclaimed home glory, kicking off a new string.
Senior central midfielder Steven Ortiz got things rolling with a left-footed half-volley that was credited as unassisted at 21:10 after a right-sided throw-in and inadequate defensive clearance. His first goal of 2017 was also a half-volley strike, that one with his off-footed right, to open the scoring in a 2-1 overtime win at Azusa Pacific on Sept. 7.
At 25:45, it was 2-0, as prized true freshman striker Jonathan Sabouri (Carlsbad/San Dieguito HS Academy) blazed down the left flank, before calmly sending a cross on the ground into the penalty area. Junior reserve winger Christian Cordell was on the scene and was true with his right-footed shot for his second of the season. It was Sabouri's second assist.
With the scoreboard clock showing 33:58, the Tritons had found the back of the net again. Senior forward Uly de la Cal's left-sided corner kick was turned into the far netting by Stan State freshman center back Bradlee Taylor for an own goal.
Finally at 37:40, junior winger Kiefer Cooksey was adjudged to have been taken down in the penalty area near the left end line, and the match official pointed to the spot. Up stepped de la Cal and buried his right-footed shot low into the left side, for his second goal this season.
That was more than enough offense as UC San Diego saw out a third shutout ont the year. Freshman goalkeeper Pedro Enciso (Vista/Rancho Buena Vista HS) had three saves for his third individual clean sheet and first since Sept. 2. Redshirt senior counterpart Patrick Colombana came up with a pair of stops.
The Tritons face two short but difficult road trips in the coming week, heading to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Sept. 22, and Cal State LA on Sunday, Sept. 24.
Triton Notes: The Tritons had gone 15-0-3 at home since that 2-1 loss to Stanislaus State on Sept. 27, 2015, including 1-0-1 this year, prior to Friday's 2-0 setback against Chico State ...
