BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UCFKnights.com) - Senior Jake Weiss and junior Romario Williams scored goals for UCF on Wednesday night, but their efforts were not enough as No. 17 Indiana notched a 4-2 home victory at Armstrong Stadium.
"I was really proud of our player's effort tonight," head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "Of course, we don't like giving up four goals in a match, but there were times where we controlled the tempo of the game and created chances that were very dangerous."
Both teams tallied 12 shots. Williams sent six attempts toward the net for UCF (1-5-1), while Weiss and freshmen Matias Pyysalo and Walker Dawkins each added at least one. The Knights forced a match-high eight corner kicks.
Indiana (5-1-2) struck first during the third minute as Jamie Vollmer scored on a cross from the left wing that served up by Matt Foldesy.
Following a quality opportunity that led to a corner, Dawkins sent a service into the box before it was cleared out to Weiss at the top of the 18. The Jupiter, Fla., native hit a high volley over the top of the keeper that skimmed the underside of the cross bar for the equalizer in the 11th minute.
The Hoosiers tallied a pair of markers in a 40-second span to post a 3-1 lead at 32:06 and broke the match open. Trever Swartz scored the first on a rebound that was originally saved by senior goalkeeper Sebastian Evers, while Patrick Doody took a shot from outside the box that went into the left side of the net.
After halftime, Williams struck a ball from the top of the box that bent past the keeper, cutting the deficit to 3-2 with 32 minutes remaining. The second goal of the match was the first time this season that the Hoosiers yielded more than one marker.
Grant Lillard increased the Indiana advantage to 4-2 by heading the ball into the net on a cross from Billy McConnell at 58:40.
Evers made a pair of saves for the Knights, while Indiana's Colin Webb made three stops.
"We are going to take some positives from tonight that related to our attacking play," Cunningham said. "We actually had some great passing sequences and held possession, which are two areas that we have been working on during practice."
UCF presented by Napleton's Volkswagen opens play in The American on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Memphis at the UCF Soccer Complex. Students can earn 4,000 Knightmare reward points for attending the match.
