UConn Earns 0-0 Draw Against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The UConn men’s soccer team earned a 0-0 draw against Cincinnati Wednesday night on the road at Gettler Stadium despite outshooting the Bearcats 17-5 in the match. With the tie, the Huskies move to 3-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play, while Cincinnati now stands at 3-5-3 in 2014 and 0-2-1 in the American Athletic Conference.
The five Cincinnati shots in the match were the fewest this season against UConn, which has allowed just one goal in the last 343 minutes. UConn redshirt freshman Scott Levene(Stamford, Conn.) allowed zero goals for the second straight game and finished the match with two saves.
Neither team saw a quality scoring chance in the first half, and UConn and Cincinnati entered the half with just five combined shots. Connecticut’s first good opportunity at a goal came in the 57th minute when a Cincinnati defensive miscue gifted the ball to UConn senior midfielder Adria Beso Marco (Lleida, Spain) in the attacking third.
Beso Marco fed the ball to sophomore forward Ethan Vanacore-Decker (Manahawkin, N.J.) near the top of the box, and the UConn forward ripped a shot that was saved by Cincinnati goalkeeper Alex Gill. Less than two minutes later, it was redshirt junior forwardTyler Leeman (Oakdale, Conn.) who had a chance to put the Connecticut on the board. After receiving a great pass from Beso Marco in the box, Leeman put two consecutive shots on goal, but neither were able to beat Gill and the danger was cleared.
The Huskies, who outshot the Bearcats, 16-3, in the first 90 minutes, had one more scoring chance in regulation following a Connecticut throw-in. The ball in from redshirt freshman defender Andrew Geres (Portland, Conn.) in the 87th minute eventually found sophomore defender Jakob Nerwinski (Lawrenceville, N.J.), who fired a shot that was cleared off the line by a Cincinnati defender.
Connecticut appeared to score the game-winner in the 92ndminute when Leeman headed the ball into the net past Gill after receiving a pass from Vanacore-Decker. The UConn forward however was called offside, and both squads failed to threaten a goal in the remaining eight minutes of the first overtime period.
Vanacore-Decker provided the Huskies their final scoring chance of the match when he attempted a free kick from the top of the box in the 109th minute. His shot attempt never made it on net, as the Cincinnati wall blocked the ball and deflected it away.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday at home against Tulsa. The game, which kicks off at 7 p.m., will be broadcasted by NSCAATV.
