UCSB Bounces To 1-0 Victory Over CSUB
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--UC Santa Barbara's Paige Gankema's shot bounced over CSUB goalie Tori Ornela (R-Fr., Lemoore, Calif., Lemoore HS) for the gamewinner to defeat the Roadrunners 1-0.
Gankema's shot was put on the CSUB goal from the 18. The ball took a huge bounce off the turf in front of the net for the goal.
CSUB appeared to have tied in the the 25th minute when Leilani Skinner (So., Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, Tucson Sahuaro HS) headed a ball into the Gauchos' net, but the goal was waived off as the officials ruled that the ball went in off of Skinner's hand. The Roadrunners outshot the Gauchos 14-9, 8-3 in the second half.
The crowd of 607 was the largest for a Roadrunner regular season match since the program made the move to Division I.
"It is a disappointing to have a result like tonight," said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. "We put together some quality opportunities but we were unable to even the game."
CSUB is at the Saint Mary's Tournament this weekend. The Roadrunners play Bucknell Friday at 1 p.m. and UC Davis Sunday at 2 p.m.
