UCSD Falls in Game of Chances at Cal Poly Pomona
The loss moves the Tritons to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in CCAA play heading into next Friday's road match at No. 23 Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-2-1, 1-2-1). CPP improves to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Beta Boris scored early for the Broncos in the 16th minute, finishing a cross from Liam Hall. Alex Portela nearly evened the match the next time down the field for the Tritons, but his strike was blocked before it could get to the frame. Sam Ball nearly got one back for UCSD but he missed high on his first shot and wide on his second in the 27th minute.
"We created some good chances after the game settled in after their first goal," said UCSD head coach Jon Pascale. "After they got their second we could have made it 2-1 but their keeper kept them in it all day. Ultimately we didn't execute in front of the goal."
In the 40th minute, Ian Trantow made it 2-0 Broncos with a goal off a one-on-one with UCSD goalkeeper Josh Cohen. Jonathan Enns finished the match off for CPP with a shot to the right corner to make it 3-0 in the 65th.
"We had a window to be in the game, but ultimately we didn't take advantage," said Pascale.
UCSD was coming off a thrilling 1-0 win at San Francisco State on Friday evening, a game in which Portela made the difference by converting a penalty kick in the 89th minute. A long travel weekend and a hot, humid day in Pomona may have taken its toll on the Tritons.
"It is never easy to play in San Francisco Friday night and then turn around a play another road game in a hot environment like it was today in Pomona," said Pascale. "When you have to travel a lot and you have to play good teams like San Francisco (State) and Pomona, it makes it a pretty tough weekend."
UCSD will play the Toros on Friday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson at 7:00 p.m. The Tritons will then return to Triton Soccer Field for their second home contest of the season at 2:30 p.m. against Cal State San Bernardino.
Don't miss Triton Soccer Kickoff 2011 on Sunday as the UCSD men's and women's soccer teams host Cal State San Bernardino. Local soccer clubs will be competing throughout the doubleheader, competing in different skills challenges for a grand prize.
