UCSD Men Split the Points With SF State, 1-1
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego and San Francisco State traded goals late in regulation and settled for a 1-1 double-overtime draw in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's soccer action Friday at Triton Soccer Stadium on Senior Night.
UC San Diego moved to 7-1-4 overall and 5-1-2 in the CCAA. SF State is now 7-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in league play. The Tritons had started the day winners of three straight, and thus completed their season-long four-game homestand an unbeaten 3-0-1. They also began the match in a two-way tie for first in the CCAA table, and with Chico State (5-0-1) idle, defending champion UCSD took over sole possession of the top perch by a single point, though the Wildcats have two games in hand.
The home side took the lead in the 80th minute as redshirt junior right back Jeff Powers fed Jonathan Sabouri(Carlsbad/San Dieguito HS Academy) down the right flank. The true freshman forward entered the penalty area and got down to the end line before providing a low cross into the middle, which senior striker Malek Bashti merely had to tap into the net from close range. The goal was Bashti's second on the year, and first from the run of play, with the other from the penalty spot. Assists went to both Powers and Sabouri. For Powers, it was a team-best fourth.
The Tritons were on this occasion unable, however, to see the result out as it stood, as SF State won a corner kick within five minutes later, and at 84:34, Tariq Pulskamp rose highest around the penalty spot to head the ball at the top of his jump, into the far netting. The corner-kick assist was provided by Andy Altamirano.
Freshman goalkeeper Pedro Enciso (Vista/Rancho Buena Vista HS) had to make only a single save for UCSD. Sophomore Kyle Harmina had four stops for the Gators.
Harmina's first save was a key point of the contest, coming on a 23rd-minute penalty kick. A strong movement by UCSD around the left edge of the 18-yard-box led to senior left back Nolan Mac getting tripped, and the penalty given by the match referee. Sophomore center back Kelvin Uribe's right-footed attempt was denied, however, as Harmina went down to his right to deflect, and a teammate kicked the ball out beyond the end line for a corner kick.
It marked a second straight missed penalty kick for the Tritons, both coming at home on successive Fridays, after they had made the first three they earned in 2017.
UCSD wound up with a 12-10 edge in shots credited, after trailing in that category at the halftime break, 5-2.
Eight seniors were honored prior to kickoff in co-captains Bashti and Mac, alongside Uly de la Cal, Danny Glascock, Zachary Lagotta (San Diego/Cathedral Catholic HS), Steven Ortiz, Kyle Panganiban and Eric Young. Young was forced to sit a seventh straight game due to injury.
Panganiban, a fourth-year center back, cut out what ended up a rather dangerous opportunity for the visitors approaching the end of the second 10-minute overtime period, tracking back to clear a loose ball off the goal line and out for a corner kick.
UC San Diego rounds out the 2017 regular season with five road contests, beginning in Arcata at Humboldt State on Friday, Oct. 13, at 3 p.m.
Triton Notes: The Tritons are 5-1-2 at home this season, and 19-1-4 over their last 24 in La Jolla ... UCSD remains an unbeaten 7-0-18 over its last 25 overtime contests dating back to 2014, and 2-0-4 in overtime in 2017.
