UCSD Women Downed by Early Goal to CPP, 1-0
LA JOLLA, Calif. - An early goal doomed UC San Diego in a 1-0 loss to Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women’s soccer action Sunday at Triton Soccer Stadium.
With a second straight defeat to open the league slate, both by the identical 1-0 score, UCSD fell to 3-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA. CPP improved to 6-2 overall and an even 1-1 in conference play.
The game’s first shot amounted to its lone goal. Daisy Duran dribbled down the right side of the field, getting near the end line before attempting to cross into the middle. The ball rebounded back to her from a Triton defender, with Duran gathering and shooting from the right diagonal into the upper left corner at 2:35. It was her fourth goal of 2014 to tie the freshman for the team lead.
Kelcie Brodsky and Ricki Ives made three saves apiece in goal for the Tritons and Broncos, respectively. The shutout was Ives’ fifth on the year.
CPP held a narrow shot advantage of 14-12. Aimee Ellis and Cassie Callahan (Coronado/Coronado HS) had three each for UCSD to lead all players.
UCSD came close to equalizing in the 19th minute when sophomore Jamie Benedetto cracked a right-footed shot from distance on the left side, with Ives barely able to tip it over the bar for a corner kick.
The 27th minute saw Ariana Fleischman’s shot from long range similarly tipped with difficulty by an outstretched Brodsky, the ball hitting off the bar and landing in Brodsky’s lap. Two minutes from the interval, Lauren Miller’s header from Stacey Atwater’s left-sided cross smacked off the bar.
With the Tritons still trying to level the score, Ellis also found the crossbar, with her left foot from the right diagonal in the 78th.
Seconds later, CPP missed another golden chance for an insurance goal, Melissa Martinez blazing one high over the frame after Arika Ontiveros had crossed from the right and Fleischman in turn passed back into the middle from the left.
UCSD is right back at home this Friday night, Oct. 3, hosting Cal State San Bernardino. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium is slated for 7 p.m., after the UCSD men face the Coyotes at 4:30 p.m.
