UCSD Women East Past Saint Martin's on Road
LACEY, Wash. - Jordyn McNutt, a true freshman out of San Diego’s University City High School, tallied her second goal of the young season just 32 seconds in and assisted on two more scores before halftime as the UC San Diego women’s soccer team cruised past Saint Martin’s University, 3-0, at SMU Soccer Field on Saturday.
Senior co-captains Izzy Pozurama and Cassie Callahan(Coronado/Coronado HS) accounted for the other two goals in the 15th and 29th minutes, respectively. It was the first of the year for both. Callahan’s marked her 20th career strike, as she headed in McNutt’s corner kick to put UCSD firmly in control. No fewer than 10 of her 20 goals in Triton colors have now come via header.
Pozurama provided the assist as McNutt found the back of the open net with what proved to be the winner just after the opening whistle. Less than 14 minutes later, the roles were reversed, as McNutt returned the favor to her veteran teammate.
Junior goalkeepers Kelcie Brodsky (65:33, two saves) and Itzel Gonzalez (24:27, one save) combined on the shutout as the Tritons (1-1) notched their first win of 2014 after dropping a tough 2-1 decision at No. 25 Seattle Pacific in its opener on Thursday night. Sunny De Boer had nine stops for SMU, which fell to 0-1-1.
UCSD held a 23-6 advantage in shots. Callahan led all players with four.
“It was a good result, but we’re going to have to improve a lot going forward,” remarked UCSD head coach Brian McManus. “We’re still a work in progress.
“It was kind of ugly. After starting off well, we dropped off a bit. Some of that had to do with the fact that we played a lot of people.”
McManus used the same starting lineup for the second game in a row. Meghan Berry, a redshirt sophomore out of San Diego Miramar College and Mt. Carmel High School, came off the bench to make her Triton debut.
The contest marked the first all-time meeting between the schools in women’s soccer.
UCSD returns to La Jolla on Sunday and awaits its 2014 home opener on Thursday, Sept. 11, against Azusa Pacific. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium is set for 4:30 p.m.
