TOUGH ROAD TESTS ON TAP FOR TRITONS
The UC San Diego women's soccer team embarks on the most difficult road trip in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) this week, heading for the second straight year to Humboldt State in Arcata and Sonoma State in Rohnert Park. The Tritons (8-4-1, 4-3-1 CCAA) fly to Oakland on Wednesday evening and travel by ground the rest of the way to Arcata, taking on a much-improved Humboldt State (7-4-1, 3-2-1 CCAA) side this Friday, Oct. 16, at 12:30 p.m. They then face 11th-ranked league leader Sonoma State (8-1-2, 5-0-1 CCAA) on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. This week's matches again make up doubleheaders with the UCSD men, who take the pitch at 3 p.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively. UCSD is an even 2-2 outside of La Jolla this year.
The Tritons share third place in the standings with Cal Poly Pomona and reigning CCAA champion Cal State L.A. at 13 points apiece. Humboldt State is part of another three-team group in seventh at 10 points each, with Sonoma State looking down on everyone else at 16 points. The top six sides in the final table qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
The Tritons were up against a similarly difficult task a year ago, departing on this same trip in need of results. They came away with a pair of improbable 1-0 shutout victories at 15th-ranked Sonoma State and then Humboldt State, both on second-half goals by Izzy Pozurama. They will attempt to achieve identical success this time around.
MATCHDAY SPECS
Once again in 2015, all regular-season home matches at Triton Soccer Stadium are free to attend. Parking permits are required, however, on weeknights on the UCSD campus. Parking permits can be purchased at machines situated at corners of either of the nearest parking lots, behind the spectator stand, as well as the Hopkins Parking Structure behind RIMAC. Parking is free on weekends. All games, home and away, have live stats. Some matches also feature video, including this week's key road tilts. Both streams are free, though Sonoma State does offer a high-definition option for a pay-per-view fee of $6.95. All live links are available here.
A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK
Katie O'Laughlin tallied UCSD's lone goal to open the scoring in a 1-1 home draw with Cal State Monterey Bay last Friday, with a sliding right-footed strike from distance in the 51st minute. The Otters grabbed the equalizer with just under seven minutes to play, as the match ultimately ended in a deadlock. Two true freshmen in Mary Reilly and Danielle Nunn then notched the late goals in the 78th and 87th minutes, respectively, to clinch all three points in a 2-0 home victory Sunday over SF State. Reilly's goal was her league-best eighth, with Nunn's the first of her college career. Kelcie Brodsky made eight saves for her fourth shutout of 2015.
TRITONS IN REGION POLL
UCSD appears at eighth in the sixth edition of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) West Region poll, released on Tuesday. The first installment of the all-important, official NCAA region polls should be unveiled next Wednesday, Oct. 21, with the top six teams in the final version of that listing, qualifying for the 2015 NCAA Championship.
POSTSEASON PICTURE
UCSD has just four CCAA matches remaining, with three on the road. There are actually three weeks left in the CCAA regular season, but the Tritons have a bye in the final week, and will be the first side to complete their 12-game slate on Oct. 23 at Chico State. UCSD is in a three-way tie for third with 13 points. Of this week's tough road opponents, Humboldt State is among three teams tied for seventh at 10 points apiece, but the Jacks and Chico State both have two less matches played than do the Tritons. Sonoma State leads the league with 16 points, and also has two fewer games under its belt. The top six teams in the final ledger will make the 2015 CCAA Tournament. The two highest point-getters qualify automatically for Kellogg Field on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona, a first-time host of the event. Two first-round tilts will be played at campus sites on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
REILLY REALLY MAKING MARK ON COLLEGE GAME
Mary Reilly, a true freshman locally out of Chula Vista and Hilltop High School, leads the CCAA with eight goals scored, 18 total points, three game-winning goals (tied), 49 shots taken and 31 shots on goal. The forward hit for an incredible four goals in a 4-2 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night, Oct. 2, becoming the first Triton to do so since former All-American Megan Dickey during an 11-0 home victory over Central Washington more than a decade before on Sept. 8, 2005. Reilly is the only player in the CCAA and in fact the West Region, with four goals in a game in 2015, the output tying her with 12 others for fourth nationally in Division II.
BRODSKY BROADENS CAREER CREDENTIALS
Kelcie Brodsky continues to add to her stellar numbers as UCSD's fourth-year starting goalkeeper. Having set the program's single-season saves mark at 114 as a true freshman in 2012, she broke the career standard in that category in the final game of her junior campaign. She then eclipsed the 300-save mark with her seventh in the 56th minute at Azusa Pacific (9/10), reaching double figures for a single contest for the second time as she finished with 11. Brodsky's up-to-date career total stands at 338. She is third in the CCAA with 53 on the year, having twice led the league in saves, in 2012 (114) and 2014 (83). At home against Point Loma (9/5), she kept her 20th individual shutout as a Triton, and now has four on the year and 23 in all. The Agoura Hills product has received postseason recognition from the CCAA for each of her first three years. She made the All-CCAA Second Team as a freshman and junior, garnering All-CCAA honorable mention in between.
O'LAUGHLIN A CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore striker Katie O'Laughlin earned CCAA Player of the Week distinction for the first time in her career on Sept. 29. The Carlsbad product accounted for the decisive goal in UCSD home victories on Sept. 25 and Sept. 27, representing her first game-winning tallies as a Triton. She is second on the team with five goals on the year.
YOUTH BEING SERVED
Nineteen of UCSD's 21 goals this season have come from first- or second-year collegians, with eight by freshman Mary Reilly, five by sophomore Katie O'Laughlin, and two each by sophomore Jordyn McNutt and freshman Megumi Barber. The other four scores have come from freshmen Summer Bales and Danielle Nunn, redshirt junior Kiera Bocchino, and redshirt sophomore Maxia Espino. Underclassmen have also been the providers of 12 of 19 assists, with four by McNutt and two each by Bales and Reilly. UCSD had a season high of six true freshmen or sophomores in its starting lineup in three straight matches from Sept. 12-18. Goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky is the only senior who has seen action.

HEAD COACH BRIAN McMANUS
Brian McManus is in his 29th season in charge of the UCSD women's soccer program. With a career record of 458-83-51, he has achieved the most wins (tied with Gabe Mejail of Merrimack College) in NCAA Division II women's soccer history, and fifth-most for all divisions (tied with Mejail). McManus' career winning percentage heading into 2015 of .820, ranked among the top 10 in college women's soccer annals, both overall (No. 9) and Division II only (No. 4). He was also second in win percentage among active Division II coaches. McManus has directed UCSD to seven national championships and a record eight CCAA banners, with the Tritons advancing to the national semifinals a remarkable 15 times in his 28 years. Under his guidance, UCSD has qualified for the NCAA tournament all 13 seasons during the Division III days, and all but three (2004, 2013-14) of 15 years since the move up to Division II. McManus' Tritons missed the CCAA Championship for the first time in 2013, having earned 13 straight berths after joining the conference. They rallied late to achieve a return trip to that event a year ago.
JONESY NOW ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH
Kristin Jones, a two-time national champion and two-time All-American as one of the greatest players to ever come through the storied UCSD women's soccer program, was elevated by Brian McManus to the position of associate head coach on Aug. 28. She is in her 16th straight year as a Triton, and 12th on the UCSD bench. Jones joined McManus' staff immediately upon exhausting her eligibility, ahead of the 2004 season, and became his top assistant in 2006.
ABOUT THE LUMBERJACKS
Humboldt State (7-4-1, 3-2-1 CCAA) is coming off of a 1-0 non-conference win at Notre Dame de Namur on Monday afternoon. The Jacks, in a three-way tie for seventh in the league standings, had not played since a 1-1 draw at SF State on Oct. 4. Paul Karver is in his third season in charge of the Jacks, who are an even 2-2 in Arcata in 2015.
SERIES HISTORY
UCSD leads the all-time series, 11-1-2. The latest meeting went 1-0 in favor of the Tritons in Arcata last Oct. 26, following a scoreless draw in La Jolla in 2013. On the Tritons' previous visit to Arcata, they posted a comfortable 4-1 victory in a contest that did not count toward league play in 2012. HSU's lone success in the series was a 2-1 decision in Arcata back in 2010.

No. 11 Sonoma State (8-1-2, 5-0-1 CCAA) is atop the CCAA standings by two points over Stanislaus State, but with two games in hand. They last posted a 5-0 non-conference rout at home over Division III UC Santa Cruz last Friday, and host Cal State San Marcos this Friday prior to welcoming in the Tritons.
