UCSD Women Play to 0-0 Tie at SF State
SAN FRANCISCO - Sunday’s California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women’s soccer match between UC San Diego and SF State at Cox Stadium ended after 110 minutes the way it began. Scoreless, as the sides settled for the draw.
UCSD thus moved to 6-5-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the CCAA. SF State is now 7-6-1 overall and 2-5-1 in league play. The Tritons stayed unbeaten against the Gators over their last nine, at 5-0-4. The result kept UCSD from moving up from its position alone in seventh in the 12-team CCAA standings. The top six teams in the final standings qualify for the CCAA Championship.
The first shot of the contest at 3:32 from Triton winger Jordyn McNutt (San Diego/University City HS) drew a save from senior Gator goalie Allison Land.
A McNutt corner kick in the 60th minute after the interval found senior teammate Cassie Callahan (Coronado/Coronado HS), but her effort fell short of the target. A Callahan header moments later from a right-sided free kick skipped wide to the left.
UCSD generated all three shot attempts of the first 10-minute overtime period, but Meghan Berry (San Diego Miramar College/Mt. Carmel HS), Devon Roncoroni (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) and Callahan all were denied the decider.
The second stanza was more of the same, with Kylie Hill going wide with a shot and fellow senior Izzy Pozurama not once, but twice, getting turned away by Land.
Rachel Arce did have once shot for the Gators in the 109th minute, but junior Triton goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky had little trouble catching the ball. Finally, Pozurama’s effort with 49 ticks remaining trickled wide to the left.
Brodsky finished with four saves for UCSD over 110 minutes, and her third individual shutout of 2014, including her second straight. Land had five stops.
UCSD outshot SF State, 16-7, and produced eight corner kicks to none by the hosts, with seven of those by specialist McNutt and the other by Pozurama.
UCSD is back on the road next weekend, at No. 8 Sonoma State on Friday, Oct. 24, and Humboldt State on Sunday, Oct. 26.
